How to Start Selling
Follow these steps before publishing your dishes on Homegry.
Step 1 — Read the official food business guidance
Before selling food, read the Food Standards Agency guidance on starting a food business. It explains who needs to register, when to register, and what to consider before trading.
The FSA says people who sell, cook, store, handle, prepare, or distribute food may be considered a food business, including those trading from home or online. It also says food businesses should register with their local authority at least 28 days before trading.

If you are going to sell food regularly, you should register your food business with your local authority.
Registration is free and should be completed before you start trading. If you are unsure whether you need to register, contact your local authority for advice.

Before selling from home, check whether you need permission from your landlord, mortgage provider, local planning authority, or local council. You may also need separate insurance, and business rates may apply in some cases.

If you earn money from selling food, you may need to tell HMRC and register as self-employed or set up another business structure.
You are responsible for understanding your own tax position. If you are unsure, check GOV.UK or speak to a qualified adviser.
